A New Bruce Highway from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast… What does it mean?

Since being announced in June, The details have emerged on stage 1 of what is called the North Brisbane Bruce Highway Western Alternative (BHWA) project. It is an additional highway that will run parallel to the west of the Bruce Highway between Brisbane & the Sunshine Coast.

When complete it will provide a new transport highway connecting to Steve Irwin Way in the north where it will continue to the Caloundra interchange. In the southern end it will likely start at Kurwongbah or Narangba but the exact path between two end points are still to be determined through ongoing investigations & community consultations.

Stage 1 has been finalised in November and 8.3km of the total 57km corridor has been locked in, running from D'aguilar Highway at Wamuran down to Upper Caboolture River Road at Moorina . The next priority stage 2 will continue south of Caboolture West from Moorina to Narangba and is around 13 kilometres long.

Some of the anticipated losers stand to be the rural landowners whose properties will be split in half or fully resumed. Some of the positive aspects to this include increased exposure to highway traffic will benefit commercial areas such as Lawnton, Beerwah & the Future Bellmere Town Centre.

It will open up transport options to some of the large new master planned communities including Morayfield South, Pine Mountain, Aura Caloundra and Caboolture West.

Caboolture West which will eventually cater for 70000 residents should commence in 2022. With a city the size of Mackay expected to call Caboolture West home in coming years, the demand for roads in the region would only grow exponentially.

When it will actually be built has not been addressed, however the current focus now seems to be deciding on the best route and resuming the land needed This is being done efficiently as the government has seen the need to get on the front foot that will factor in the state’s future growth, and will ensure the efficiency of the road networks in the north to accommodate a growing population.

Overall it is a key piece of infrastructure to avoid the Bruce Highway becoming a perpetual carpark.
